Shibori

Shibori is a method of tie-dye, practised by the Japanese to a very high level.  Small areas of fabric are gathered and then tied or sewn so that when the fabric is dipped, the tied areas resist the dye.  The red piece of fabric in the centre of the photo above has been partially untied after the dyeing process.  The items listed below have all used the shibori method to achieve their surface design.  The 'puckered' texture of the finished fabric is highly prized by the Japanese and the fabric is not pressed flat.  When used for scarves, it provides an additional level of insulation.  I have a collection of silk shibori scarves which I wear all through the winter!
